FSC MISSION: Our mission is to provide opportunities in Tarrant County for People to support People.
The Family Support Council was formed in 2000 with a grant from the Texas Department of MHMR. It was developed to establish a Tarrant County networking group for self-advocates and families of persons with disabilities. MHMRTC levered these funds to link with Easter Seals Greater Northwest Texas who received similar family support initiative funding from the Department of Health.
The Family Support Council is a coalition of self-advocates, family members, agencies and community collaborators that have continued addressing the Council’s priorities long after the grant funds ended:
Priority 1: Inclusion — It’s the Council’s position to promote all forms of community inclusion of people with disabilities.
Priority 2: Transition — Although transition is typically referred to as the time at which high-school students move into post-high-school settings, the Council has found people with disabilities and families need support and access to community resources though the lifespan. Therefore, the Family Support Council hosts semi-annual transition fairs with collaborative support from advocates, agencies, vendors, service providers and the local transit authority.
Priority 3: Awareness — Volunteers from the Council are continually searching for avenues to reach out to people with disabilities, families and other community entities to raise awareness about available resources and recruit additional community supports in order for People to Support People in Tarrant County.
